Project

BYE BYE UTOPIA

Bregenz, Austria
2010

In the KUB Arena, raumlaborberlin has undertaken an architectural intervention, which reflects our main concerns and marks the space of the Arena as an autonomous location. A sloping plane cutting diagonally through the ground floor creates a second space which is accessible from the rear of the building. Above this slope, a walkable landscape made of doors from typical former East German ‘Plattenbauten’ (buildings constructed from concrete slabs) permits new perspectives on the architecture of the Kunsthaus. The construction space beneath the sur face serves to present the so-called ‘raumlaborwelten’ (lit.: space laboratory worlds) and gives room for lectures, workshops, and round-table discussions.

Project

Odyssee Europa

Ruhrgebiet, Germany
2009

Six plays and a voyage of discovery through the interworld. Odysseus comes home and no longer recognises his native island of Ithaca. The theatres of the Ruhr have invited six European authors to retell Homer's famous epic poem. The individual episodes are linked to form a complete story, which is performed on five weekends. The audience undertakes a journey from theatre to theatre that forms its own odyssey through the world of light and shadow of a European metropolitan landscape. raumlaborberlin presents a surprising change of perspective. Where are we? In a landscape of memories or in the scenario of a near future?

Eichbaum Countdown

Mülheim, Germany
2009

Subway-station Eichbaum between Essen and Mülheim/Ruhr is an urban spot of spatial deficiency, that has to be converted in near future. The project "Eichbaum Countdown" adresses to young people of the neighborhood, who are connected to the Eichbaum-station. How do young people use the site? What are their whishes and dreams for Eichbaum? To figure their answers out is the aim of the projects workshops. In a second phase raumlaborberlin realised in collaboration with the young people and different experts the best ideas of the workshops. Eichbaumboxer, a regional boxing championship, Eichbaumbauer, a participative building workshop, a "Wall of Fame" and a local Rap-Battle.

Project

Eichbaumoper

Mülheim, Germany
2009

Eichbaumoper characterises the temporary transformation of the metro station Eichbaum into an opera house. ‚Eichbaum’ is a crosspoint and station located between the cities of Essen and Mülheim. Located in the eye of the highway intersection between the motorway A40 and the B1, this station was built using a lot of concrete in the 70’s as a fit for the future infrastructure project. Once considered as a place of aspiration and hope, the ‚Eichbaum’ is now shaped by vandalism, fear and foreboding. However, ‚Eichbaum’ is an important connection in an urban landscape that is dissected by highways and metro lines. At the same time, the site can be viewed as a model for the current situation of this former industrial region, facing urban and social challenges.

Project

Bang Bang

Anyang/Seoul, South Korea
2009

BANG BANG is a van, expandable to the back, to both sites and to the top. Bubbles and movable architectural elements are offering a huge amount of variations. BANG BANG is a multifunctional tool, able to work on different scales with the city and its citizens. BANG BANG is drifting through the OPEN CITY transporting and translating the topic of APAP 2010: art as a generator of urban processes. BANG BANG is an attractor, an explorer, an expedition mobile, a catalyzer and a connector, BANG BANG is a placemaker, a starting point for artistic projects, for community interactions between themselves as well as building relations with APAP and the artists from Korea and all over the world.

Project

Spacebuster

New York, United States
2009

Invited by Storefront for Art and Architecture the Spacebuster was developed and designed to explore the qualities and possibilities of public space in New York City. Spacebuster interacts with the architectural and the social space and its conditions. It opens urban space for temporary collective uses. The Spacebuster is build on the basis of a step van and a big inflatable space coming out of the back of the van fitting up to 80 persons in it. People enter the bubble through the passenger’s door of the van walking through to the back down a ramp right into the inflated space. The bubble is supported by air pressure generated by a fan underneath the ramp. The membrane of the bubble is translucent so people on the inside can see schematically what´s going on outside and vice versa. So the membrane acts as a semi permeable border between the public and the more private.
