  Making Futures School

  Over the course of two weeks, over 150 participants took part in a diverse curriculum convened by practitioners in the field of spatial practices. Acting as a non-disciplinary learning environment, the School proposes, designs, builds, negotiates, maintains, performs and celebrates an educational and convivial space in and around Haus der Statistik, Berlin. At the same time, it becomes a dynamic actor within a process of urban transformation, serving as a common sphere of action between participants, neighbors and civic society.

  Making Futures Bauhaus+

  Making Futures Bauhaus+ is an action research project that addresses questions of architecture as a collective form and architecture as a resource. Departing from these two perspectives, it operates as an experimental research unit that advances future paths for architectural practice and education. It was initiated in 2018 as a cooperation between raumlabor and the Berlin University of the Arts on the occasion of the Bauhaus’ centenary.

Zusammen mit Vertretern des Raumlabors aus Berlin, und Studierenden verschiedener Disziplinen aus Nowosibirsk, arbeiteten Schülerinnen und Schüler der Schule 197 an einem räumlichen und zeichnerisch-gestalterischen Eingriff in ihre Schulumgebung.

  The “Market Renewal Plans” in Liverpool have left neighbourhoods empty and decayed. Cultural institutions like the Liverpool Biennale and the 2008 European Capital of Culture, as well as initiatives by artists/architects such as Assemble, have demonstrated an interest in this situation and the opportunities it provides.

  Marseille, France

  In 2013 Marseille became the first European Capital of Culture to run a parallel, self-organised Off festival. Since then, many cultural initiatives have emerged out of the Capital of Culture’s budget or associated resources. USR looks into the Quartiers Créatifs, an MP2013 project involving artists in residencies in developing urban areas. Meanwhile, ambitions for Marseille to become an economic and touristic hub in Europe have sparked new mechanisms of city-making.

  As Paris witnesses fundamental policy changes, projects like “Grand Paris” are redefining the future of the city. Striving for a comprehensive plan for the entire Paris region, this scheme complements strategic planning guidelines as well as new economic, social and cultural policies. USR investigates participative projects in the banlieues and central districts, which deviate from classic top-down urbanism in their approaches to a range of urban topics.

  braambergen is a trash site. now it looks green. it features the highest hills of almere / NL. in this design studio, we look at it as a landscape to come, as a place looking for it's future users and uses. the three interventions by the 8 students in the course adress the place in it's scale, carefully selecting moments of intervention.

  Osthang Project: Summer School

  The Osthang Project - International Summer School and Festival for Future Modes of Living Together took place in summer 2014 on the underused plot of the Osthang, located amid the historically significant ensemble of the former artist colony Mathildenhöhe. As Summer School and festival it brought together knowledge and experience from architecture, social and political science, economy, activism and art, as well as experimental building and experimental forms of living from around the world.

  The City as a Sphere for Action

  The Symposium at the end of the Osthang Project Summer School placed the recently completed Osthang campus into a larger context. The “functional change” of public space has evolved to become a key issue in architecture and urban planning discourse over the past 20 years. Therefore the citizens of Darmstadt – along with the participants of the Summer School and international experts – were invited to search for the potentials of open, social spaces and the alternative planning and building practice.
