Novosibirsk, Russia 2017

The idea behind the Houses of Literature for Children is to create places, with the only purpose to generate a contact between children and the written culture. This contact is meant to create a permanent link to literature and reading as well as learning through reading, recognizing and understanding.
Herouville St. Claire, France 2009
The project "les Archivistes" is the search for parts of a puzzle that make up the history of a modern city. Over one year, residents of Herouville St.Claire participated in workshops with actors, choreographers, artists, writers, and architects, from which emerged fragments of their own imaginary City Archive. Herouville St.Claire is a 1960's "ville neuf" (new town), planned and built with all the urban resources postwar modernism had to offer. "Le Tabularium" now attempted to put the puzzle together. In antiquity the Tabularium was the place where inscribed clay tablets were housed. Our Tabularium consists of fragments of these remains on which parts of the city's history were engraved and with which each visitor can now compose his/her own story.

Raumlabor approached this project with the questions: is reinventing the history of a place a good idea, when the current accepted history isn't helping the present situation? Finding, as in our case, no suitable point of departure/entry for a solution to apparent urbanistic problems, is it possible through the interweaving of truth, urban legend and invention to inspire regional pride in the inhabitants of a desolated residential area? And when this (hi)story is presented in a positive light, could it get the ball rolling? Is it possible by reinventing a history to create a new perspective for a site which has undergone a century of urban catastrophes?
Berlin/Salzburg, Austria/Germany 2009
The balcony of Salzburger Landestheater becomes an enlargement of the "smoker's foyer". Readings, cinema, concerts, dancing or casino can take place in this additional room. The bubble is translucent and very well adapted for projections from inside or outside. The result is a completely new view at night. Local and friendly artists are resposible for performances on the balcony.
Berlin, Germany 2009
raumlabor_berlin is engaged with temporarily transforming locations: a gallery into a laboratory, a public square into a location for scientific discourse or a cold corridor into a place with new social qualities. When spaces are meant not only to be neutral shells for content but also to convey particular functions and serve as catalysts, the way of dealing with these spaces, their design and programming have to be integral components of the overall conception. For CTM.09, raumlabor_berlin modifies the corridor of Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien - a space of transit - into a communicative and social centre for the building. For this, they will invent a new structure to be built into the space, which will be constructed out of doors from demolished pre-cast concrete buildings in Halle-Neustadt.
Oslo, Norway 2008
0047 Oslo proudly presents raumlaborberlin. This is raumlabor's first show in Scandinavia. Their latest project is a submarine made out of recycled garbage. The submarine was constructed within a 10-day period in the city of Mannheim together with local people who had no idea about shipbuilding, and then set out on a passage across the Rhine to the city of Ludwigshafen. After having successfully managed to trigger a participatory working process, Raumlaborberlin confidently set out on the next expedition We Are Coming! - a permanent submarine-line from Berlin to Oslo at 0047.

For the "house of imagination" raumlabor berlin interlaces two architectural ideas of living space in Torstrasse 166: A 1:1 modell of a Plattenbau flat type P2 which is living reality in Halle-Neustadt and many cities of the former GDR is built into a Gründerzeit flat. Both models date from a time of mass production of living space, the Gründerzeit as a market driven approach, the P2 flat as a government-controlled approach.

Construction work is going on at “Wonders of the Prairie”. In the eyes of the public a boat is built from pieces of wood, junk, and offset-metals at the Alte Feuerwache. A sign points out that raumlabor-berlin is building a submarine which will be sent onto a „dangerous“ journey on the Neckar and Rhein to Ludwigshafen on Sept. 20. At its destination it will be handed over to the Kunstverein Ludwigshafen. We are looking for ten courageous persons who navigate the vessel on the difficult journey and for persons who want to participate in the building of the boat.
