Festival of New Character Worlds
One of the mayor legacies of modernist architecture is the slogans that made it into the everyday thinking of people towards space. Everybody is familiar with „Less is more“ and „Form follows Function“. The linearity of these arguments is illusive. Life is more than one sentence and Architecture is too.
raumlabor_berlin is engaged with temporarily transforming locations: a gallery into a laboratory, a public square into a location for scientific discourse or a cold corridor into a place with new social qualities. When spaces are meant not only to be neutral shells for content but also to convey particular functions and serve as catalysts, the way of dealing with these spaces, their design and programming have to be integral components of the overall conception. For CTM.09, raumlabor_berlin modifies the corridor of Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien - a space of transit - into a communicative and social centre for the building. For this, they will invent a new structure to be built into the space, which will be constructed out of doors from demolished pre-cast concrete buildings in Halle-Neustadt.

0047 Oslo proudly presents raumlaborberlin. This is raumlabor's first show in Scandinavia. Their latest project is a submarine made out of recycled garbage. The submarine was constructed within a 10-day period in the city of Mannheim together with local people who had no idea about shipbuilding, and then set out on a passage across the Rhine to the city of Ludwigshafen. After having successfully managed to trigger a participatory working process, Raumlaborberlin confidently set out on the next expedition We Are Coming! - a permanent submarine-line from Berlin to Oslo at 0047.

For the "house of imagination" raumlabor berlin interlaces two architectural ideas of living space in Torstrasse 166: A 1:1 modell of a Plattenbau flat type P2 which is living reality in Halle-Neustadt and many cities of the former GDR is built into a Gründerzeit flat. Both models date from a time of mass production of living space, the Gründerzeit as a market driven approach, the P2 flat as a government-controlled approach.
