In context of Portavillion 2010 our mobile bubbletecture Rosy (the ballarina) travelled to 15 locations in the City of London. Rosy provided space for dance events, performances and discussions at the “London Festival for architecture”.

SPACE BUSTER II & GENERATOR NY CITY

Invited by Storefront for Art and Architecture the SPACEBUSTER was developed and designed to explore the qualities and possibilities of public space in New York City in 2008. Spacebuster interacts with the architectural and the social space and its conditions. It opens urban space for temporary collective uses. 2011 we were invited again, to reactivate the SPACEBUSTER as part of the Festival of Ideas for The New City.

THE GENERATOR // SEDIA VENEZIANA

At the BIENNALE DI ARCHITETTURA, VENICE the software SEDIA VENEZANA was introduced and tested. The software is a set of construction plans and instructions for modules, which are developed for easy assembly. The construction methods are constantly tested and improved. The modules can be assembled into chairs, tables, and shelves, as well as walls and shelters. The participants can transform the modules accidentally or intentionally. A process of learning by doing. The team will record and reuse all possible mutations of the system and incorporate them into a growing structure.

Conceived as a place that is both real and ideal, the House of Contamination is an experimental museum designed to host Artissima's curatorial programme Poetry in the Form of a Rose. Located inside the vast area of the Oval Linghotto, the large temporary structure hosts a number of spaces for each of the art disciplines investigated: dance, cinema, literature, design, urbanism and education. A ‘project within a project’, the House of Contamination is conceived as a model, a prototype of a contemporary cultural center.

Eichbaum Countdown

Mülheim, Germany

Subway-station Eichbaum between Essen and Mülheim/Ruhr is an urban spot of spatial deficiency, that has to be converted in near future. The project "Eichbaum Countdown" adresses to young people of the neighborhood, who are connected to the Eichbaum-station. How do young people use the site? What are their whishes and dreams for Eichbaum? To figure their answers out is the aim of the projects workshops. In a second phase raumlaborberlin realised in collaboration with the young people and different experts the best ideas of the workshops. Eichbaumboxer, a regional boxing championship, Eichbaumbauer, a participative building workshop, a "Wall of Fame" and a local Rap-Battle.

MAKE IT TAKE IT

Innsbruck, Austria

In Innsbruck raumlabor gives a framework, but leaves space for participation and individualization. The „Biergarnitur für Tirol“, a communicative furniture is a guide for an opportunity for a dialogue. Tools and wood are provided. The process depends on the participation and motivation of the visitor. The usage of the Biergarnitur is not given but the visitor is invited to transform and to bring the built furniture into context.

Eichbaumoper

Mülheim, Germany

Eichbaumoper characterises the temporary transformation of the metro station Eichbaum into an opera house. ‚Eichbaum’ is a crosspoint and station located between the cities of Essen and Mülheim. Located in the eye of the highway intersection between the motorway A40 and the B1, this station was built using a lot of concrete in the 70’s as a fit for the future infrastructure project. Once considered as a place of aspiration and hope, the ‚Eichbaum’ is now shaped by vandalism, fear and foreboding. However, ‚Eichbaum’ is an important connection in an urban landscape that is dissected by highways and metro lines. At the same time, the site can be viewed as a model for the current situation of this former industrial region, facing urban and social challenges.

Spacebuster

Invited by Storefront for Art and Architecture the Spacebuster was developed and designed to explore the qualities and possibilities of public space in New York City. Spacebuster interacts with the architectural and the social space and its conditions. It opens urban space for temporary collective uses. The Spacebuster is build on the basis of a step van and a big inflatable space coming out of the back of the van fitting up to 80 persons in it. People enter the bubble through the passenger’s door of the van walking through to the back down a ramp right into the inflated space. The bubble is supported by air pressure generated by a fan underneath the ramp. The membrane of the bubble is translucent so people on the inside can see schematically what´s going on outside and vice versa. So the membrane acts as a semi permeable border between the public and the more private.

The Promising Land

Raumlabor approached this project with the questions: is reinventing the history of a place a good idea, when the current accepted history isn't helping the present situation? Finding, as in our case, no suitable point of departure/entry for a solution to apparent urbanistic problems, is it possible through the interweaving of truth, urban legend and invention to inspire regional pride in the inhabitants of a desolated residential area? And when this (hi)story is presented in a positive light, could it get the ball rolling? Is it possible by reinventing a history to create a new perspective for a site which has undergone a century of urban catastrophes?

Balkonbiennale

The balcony of Salzburger Landestheater becomes an enlargement of the "smoker's foyer". Readings, cinema, concerts, dancing or casino can take place in this additional room. The bubble is translucent and very well adapted for projections from inside or outside. The result is a completely new view at night. Local and friendly artists are resposible for performances on the balcony.

raumlabor_berlin is engaged with temporarily transforming locations: a gallery into a laboratory, a public square into a location for scientific discourse or a cold corridor into a place with new social qualities. When spaces are meant not only to be neutral shells for content but also to convey particular functions and serve as catalysts, the way of dealing with these spaces, their design and programming have to be integral components of the overall conception. For CTM.09, raumlabor_berlin modifies the corridor of Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien - a space of transit - into a communicative and social centre for the building. For this, they will invent a new structure to be built into the space, which will be constructed out of doors from demolished pre-cast concrete buildings in Halle-Neustadt.

"Glow-Lounge" GLOW: Forum of Light in Art and Architecture

Invited by the „GLOW“ festival, raumlabor designed together with plastique-fantastique in cooperation with Designhuis-Eindhoven, the „GLOW-Lounge“ festival centre. A light object out of 600 crates. Unique in the Netherlands, for the third successive time the center of Eindhoven is the stage and podium for „GLOW: Forum of Light in Art and Architecture“. We placed the center, a gateway to the public space, in the middle of an pedestrian refuge island between the PSV-Stadium and the headquarter of the Phillips company. The transformation of the site, the pneumatic spatial mantle gives up space for concerts, spontaneous readings as soon as performance and dj-appearance. Guests like Moxxs (NL) and Silas Bieri (illeist, CH). Catering concept by Designhuis-Eindhoven.

P2 Residence

For the "house of imagination" raumlabor berlin interlaces two architectural ideas of living space in Torstrasse 166: A 1:1 modell of a Plattenbau flat type P2 which is living reality in Halle-Neustadt and many cities of the former GDR is built into a Gründerzeit flat. Both models date from a time of mass production of living space, the Gründerzeit as a market driven approach, the P2 flat as a government-controlled approach.
