Iasi, Romania 2008
To inform the public about Periferic 8 a temporary architectural structure - the Info Point - was built in front of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University. The architectural structure functions as a meeting and info-point of Periferic 8 and as a public space for discussions and screenings. It is not only a functional structure but also a specific object that serves as a metaphor for a Utopian place highlighting the necessity of public spaces for the community and acting as a catalyst for social awareness. The design for the Info Point for Periferic Biennial originally suggests three structures to be placed in public space in the city of Iasi, Romania. The three structures follow the idea of space which is partly undetermined - in terms of its use as well as its interpretation and future appearance. They propose themselves as abstract additions to public space, offering their spatial specifies for personal appropriation and play. The structures develop a spatial negotiation between the inside and the outside, between containing and revealing, access and exclusion - a reference to a condition of the contemporary society, especially in rapidly developing post-socialist countries.

The ctiy mattress is an installation in public space. It is a triangular pneumatic structure, measuring 15 metres on each side. As catalytic object it is a platform for various actions. It is concieved for "tuned city", a 5 day conference on sound and public space. Here it offers a provisional space on Berlins Alexanderplatz for specialists, experts, audience and passers-by to meet, rest and dive into the conferences dialogues. The over-scaled soft surface questiones our behavioural codes in public space, especially the physical actions of the bodies within the space. For "Tuned City" the sound of the conference speakers is transmitted through wireless headphones to each listener individually. A tension is created between the individual and the temporary collective. The city mattress is an experimental condensator for acting in public.
Berlin/Warsaw, Germany/Poland 2008
During our Warsaw visit we passed by several post socialist, in-between spaces that obviously have no formal purpose and which were often occupied by informal uses like markets and its economies. Not only those “waiting” spaces are occupied , even regular street space is used by people selling their goods on the sidewalks. In combination with the loss of “jarmark europa” as warsaw's central informal trading site, a serious lack of space for these activities emerges. Our argument is, that the informal part of the cities economy is an important part of urban diversity and its user - interface. The informal markets generate an alternative way of establishing businesses, of individual careers and learning economic and social networks.

The System is a labyrinthine structure made of 223 doors from buildings that have been demolished in Halle-Neustadt. It opens up spaces to the visitors in unexpected ways, reflecting diverse aspects of our work.
