CHUCK-A-LUCK

Arnhem/Presikhaaf, Netherlands
2012

Cities are a process and so is Presikhaaf. This neighborhood of Arnhem build in the 50’s is a place subject to transition and changes. Today, 50 years later, the redevelopment of Presikhaaf is in a full swing. New buildings are build, some get destroyed and reconstructed, always changing the face of the neighborhood and developing new area. Inspired by the famous drawing of M.C. Escher "Relativity", Chuck-a-luck is a mobile and changing structure that comes in public spaces. It is a cubic structure enable to turn, like a dice, offering 6 different faces, 6 different designs and many possibilities. It comes, set up for a while, before moving to a new position, following the development of the city. In interaction with its environment and with the inhabitants, the structure sets up and transform the existing surroundings keeping people in a dynamism favorable for appropriation, interpretation and creation.

Project

SOAP OPERA

Essen, Germany
2010

Black, white, dirty, clean, dressing room, locker room, coal, soap, shower baths, mine, stage. Theater happens right now! The miners' daily cleansing in the former bath house after the shift is what the Soap Opera is about. The transformation of the former colliery into a cultural location evokes a cleaning process. In the real mine, the underground part of the world remains inaccessible, experienced only as an idea. Outside, a luminous mist of bubbles floats between the old bath house, the shaft tower and the grove of birch trees. The visitors immerse themselves into the froth and reach interior foam spaces, from which they have singular views of the shaft tower and surrounding buildings.

Project

le Tabularium

Herouville St. Claire, France
2009

The project "les Archivistes" is the search for parts of a puzzle that make up the history of a modern city. Over one year, residents of Herouville St.Claire participated in workshops with actors, choreographers, artists, writers, and architects, from which emerged fragments of their own imaginary City Archive. Herouville St.Claire is a 1960's "ville neuf" (new town), planned and built with all the urban resources postwar modernism had to offer. "Le Tabularium" now attempted to put the puzzle together. In antiquity the Tabularium was the place where inscribed clay tablets were housed. Our Tabularium consists of fragments of these remains on which parts of the city's history were engraved and with which each visitor can now compose his/her own story.

Project

Raumstruktur 01

Berlin, Germany
2009

raumlabor_berlin is engaged with temporarily transforming locations: a gallery into a laboratory, a public square into a location for scientific discourse or a cold corridor into a place with new social qualities. When spaces are meant not only to be neutral shells for content but also to convey particular functions and serve as catalysts, the way of dealing with these spaces, their design and programming have to be integral components of the overall conception. For CTM.09, raumlabor_berlin modifies the corridor of Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien - a space of transit - into a communicative and social centre for the building. For this, they will invent a new structure to be built into the space, which will be constructed out of doors from demolished pre-cast concrete buildings in Halle-Neustadt.
