aus flug hafen sicht / Zukunft Mitteldeutschland

Halle an der Saale, Germany
2008

“Aus Flug Hafen Sicht” takes place from April to June 2008. Directors, choreographers, architects and artists will offer excursions to areas of one of the strangest territories in Central Germany. Wishful economic thinking and melancholy, departure and failure converge here like nowhere else: an empty airport building, which was to supposed to become the motor of development for a whole region, next to a more or less abandoned village between motorway and runway.

Brandherde

If things continue as they are on earth we’ll soon all have to move to the new planet which has been discovered south of the Orion Nebula. How should we live there? What will we need? What language will we speak? What songs will we sing? Over a two day period, a model of the new planet will be built on the stage of the Kammerspiele including hymns, pamphlets and poetry.

Backdoor Tours

Berlin, Germany
2006

Have you ever entered an exhibition through the back door or been given a tour of a city by non-locals? “Lost strangers”, newcomers to Berlin who don’t know the city too well, present August Strasse to the exhibition visitors. They tell them its history in freshly-learned German and present the 4th berlin biennale to them from their very own personal point of view. The tour ends at the backdoor office at the start of August Strasse where visitors can look up what they did not understand and take it home with them.

A temporary local transport system in Kreuzberg private cars, motorcycles, solar-powered boats and horse-drawn carriages take the citizens of Kreuzberg through their neighbourhood and to the theatre over a two-week period at 1€ per ride. The interchange stations were designed by artists and architects and the theatre was converted into a model of Kreuzberg using old furniture and waste.

Hotel Neustadt

Halle an der Saale/Halle-Neustadt, Germany
2003

“The Hotel-Stadt directly developed into self-regulating, informal urban strategies generated through participation of and cooperation between artists and populace, outsiders and locals, top-down and bottom-up movements. Just like a high-rise favela […][“Hotel Neustadt”] was a city without a master plan, a new city within a fading context, a temporary city within permanence, a nomadic city within a settlement.” Kyong Park, from: “Moving cities, moving nations”, Hotel Neustadt p.120 et seq. Kinderstadt

Halle an der Saale, Germany
2002

What is a city and how do our children perceive it? How can a city work without a city hall, where council meetings take place in public space and there’s more than one mayor because it’s stupid if one person gets to decide everything? A city whose courts are called “care departments”, where there’s a detective’s office instead of the police, which is also a dating service. Children planned their city for a year, built it for six weeks and then lived in it. Their parents had to go to parent-garden.
