raumlaborkorea is an intervention and research unit of raumlaborberlin invited by the 3rd ANYANG PUBLIC ART PROJECT (APAP 2010)/ A NEW COMMUNITY IN THE OPEN CITY. Open City is a self-learning laboratory, constantly in creation and transformation for the collective research of the New Community.
We were asked to design, build and program the center of the open city with the purpose of initiating a process between international and local artists as well as the citizens of the open city, to discuss the issues of community against the background of rapid urban redevelopments to construct a unique form of collective space.
A complex challenge needs a complex strategy composed of 5 interweaved layers of discussion with the existing urban and social landscape: exploration, using, building, planning and space-making. Our tools for this are:
OPEN HOUSE, OPEN MASTERPLAN, OPEN PROGRAM OPEN EXHIBITION and BANG BANG.

Unsere Aufgabe ist es, ein Zentrum für die Open City zu entwickeln, zu bauen und zu programmieren. Ziel ist es, einen Prozess zu initiieren in dem internationale und lokale Künstler gemeinsam mit den Bewohnern der Open City den Begriff der Community diskutieren und vor dem Hintergrund der rasanten urbanen und gesellschaftlichen Transformationen in Korea eine besondere Form von kollektivem Raum konstruieren.
Eine komplexe Herausforderung die einer komplexen Strategie bedarf. Wir verweben 5 Ebenen der Auseinandersetzung mit der bestehenden Stadtlandschaft: das Erkunden, das Benutzen, das Bauen, das Planen und das Verorten. Unsere Werkzeuge dafür sind:

a vertical village, also architecture, but rather a social sculpture. Its design is based on subjective urban studies (OPEN MASTERPLAN) and is thus, spatially and socially intertwined with the existing urban landscape. The residents as its future users are involved in the design, programming and construction. OPEN HOUSE combines individual and collective or public uses, such as a bar, a kitchen, a tea house, several pavilions, shops, workshops, a children’s home, a gallery and a community farm.
From 26 July to August 28. more than 200 people involved in our public Building Workshop. We built houses together, including its furnishings, various pieces of furniture, from children’s stools to a drafting table, as well as stencils for a variety of signs. We inaugurated completed houses, the Bar, the Tea Bang and our Real Estate Planning House, where we developed and collected ideas for future individual and collective uses of Open House. In parallel, a construction company constructed the steel frame structure, arranging five platforms located around a tower. In early September, we plan to be lift the built houses with a crane onto the platforms and to dock with the tower. This is the moment of appropriation by people, ideas and the hundreds of plants that have been cultivated by residents of Anyang and in cooperation with Marjetica Potrc.

OPEN HOUSE/ ein vertikales Dorf, auch eine Architektur, eher aber eine soziale Skulptur, deren Design auf subjektiven urbanen Studien (OPEN MASTERPLAN) basiert und somit direkt räumlich wie sozial verschränkt ist mit der bestehenden Stadtlandschaft. Die Bewohner als zukünftige Nutzer beteiligen sich an der Planung, an der Programmierung und am Bau. OPEN HOUSE kombiniert individuelle sowie kollektive oder öffentliche Nutzungen wie einer Bar, einer Küche, einem Teehause, verschiedenen Pavillons, Shops, Ateliers, einem Kinderhaus, einer Galerie und einer Community-Farm.
Vom 26. Juli bis zum 28.8. beteiligten sich mehr als 200 Menschen an unserer öffentlichen Bauwerkstatt. Wir bauten gemeinsam Häuser, die Einrichtung, verschiedene Möbel, vom Kinderstuhl bis zum Planetisch sowie Schablonen für verschiedenste Schilder. Wir eröffneten die fertigen Häuser, die Bar, das Teehaus und unser Real Estate Planungsbüro. Hier entwickeln wir gemeinsam Ideen für die zukünftige individuelle und kollektive Nutzung. Parallel baut eine Baufirma eine Stahlskelettstruktur, 5 Plattformen ordnen sich um einen Turm herum. Anfang September planen wir die gebauten Häuser dann mit einem Kran auf die Plattformen zu stellen und an den Turm anzudocken. Das ist der Moment der Besiedlung durch die Menschen, ihre Ideen und durch hunderte Pflanzen, die wir in den letzten Wochen in Zusammenarbeit mit Marjetica Potrc und den Bewohnern gepflanzt haben.
