Open House is a vertical village, a social sculpture. We were invited by the ANYANG PUBLIC ART PROJECT (APAP 2010) to design, build and program the center of the Open City, a self-learning laboratory, constantly in creation and transformation for the collective research of the New Community.

Our project OPEN HOUSE engages the city of Anyang, Korea and their inhabitants in a critical situation. High speed urbanism has replaced many densely populated, mixed areas with even denser mono-functional high-rise apartment towers. The project is placed in a public park, adjacent to one the future redevelopment areas. The area has a very lively economy, consisting mostly of small shops, traders, bangs and restaurants. It has a well grown social structure, which the people from the area highly value. The current redevelopment model destroys all these soft qualities of the city. A conflict arises. On the other hand spaces and routines for managing these types of conflicts are missing. This is, where our project comes in.

An diesem Punkt setzt unser Projekt an.

Anyang

An intervention and research unit from raumlabor developed a complex strategy to initiate a process between international and local artists as well as the citizens to discuss the issues of community against the background of the rapid urban redevelopments to construct a unique form of collective space. The strategy was composed of five interweaved layers of discussion with the existing urban and social landscape: exploration, using, building, planning and space-making. The tools for this were five inclusive interventions and projects: Open House, Open Masterplan, Open Program, Open Exhibition and Bang Bang.

Finding Potentials
The first phase of the project started out with research based mapping and documentation of all phenomena, situations, social potentials, etc found. All findings were recorded in a continuously evolving drawing. It is structured by four layers of investigation: potential, desire, process and fiction. The map of desire shows the wishes of locals with different living conditions. The Urban Detective Workshop was an investigation into the city and the surrounding area, students went to discover the neighbourhoods of Hakwon Park. In groups, they observed and analysed different districts to finally share findings and insights. One phenomena that was frequently found in Anyang was the urban garden, a concept that we included in the following workshops.

Potentiale finden

Activating the Site
The moving Bang-Bang truck with its inflatable, transparent space served as a link between the people of Anyang, the various open spaces and the fixed site. Artists created installations inside the sphere and it functioned as a mobile venue for research. Curious people were informed about the ongoing work and invited to take part in upcoming workshops. The actions of the mobile planting station were the first steps in establishing the community garden. A moving caravan visited the neighbouring districts to exchange pots for plants and invited citizens to plant their own special pot to be added to our garden. The experiences and observations had a direct influence on the architecture and functions of Open House.

Collaborative Building
We set up the temporary “Open house real estate planning office” that, instead of selling space, was looking for individual ideas on how to use the space, the houses and platforms, and additionally searched for ideas on how the structure could be collectively organised. From 26. July to August 28. more than 200 people had been involved in our public building workshop. We built houses together, including various furnishings, from children’s stools to a drafting table, as well as stencils for a variety of signs.

Gemeinschaftliches Bauen

Imagining the Future
In early September, the finished houses were lifted onto the steel platforms, previously assembled by a construction company. This was the moment of appropriation by people, ideas and the hundreds of plants that had been cultivated by residents of Anyang and in cooperation with the artist Marjetica Potrc. The earlier joint efforts connected the village to the citizens of Anyang before it became a tower. Ideas of how to use the new structure were generated through the collaborative work with residents and artists. The structure is now open to use, it is linked into the shared narrative of the area and encourages the people to continue developing further purposes and visions for the house and the development of the neighbourhood, which is pressing.

The completed Open House is a vertical village, an architectural and social sculpture, that was designed based on subjective urban studies and is therefore, spatially and socially intertwined with the existing urban landscape. The locals, as its users, were involved in the design, programming and construction. Open House combines individual, collective and public uses, such as a bar, a kitchen, a tea house, several pavilions, shops, workshops, a children’s home, a gallery and a community farm.

At the TODAYSART festival in the Hague we build a "Vortex" - a space like a whirlwind from locally available materials.

I am nature, I am machine, I am social, I make, I dream, I feel, I sit down, I eat. I am human. Purity is a fiction of the past, contamination is everywhere, form reigns, the mixture of everything with everything – we felt this was inevitable, now we know it is.

The metabolic kitchen is inspired by the simultaneity of food cultures in contemporary food production. Plants and animals are raised in mechanised, industrial plants and then harvested, slaughtered and processed more or less automatically. At the same time, urban gardeners start raising their own locally grown food while regional farmers produce organic goods. In a city like Berlin, with it’s multitude of lifestyles, these contradicting ways of understanding food coexist naturally.

The kitchen looks at metabolism as the basis for all life on the planet. It happens all around, most of the time unnoticed. The kitchen looks at a range of contemporary recipes and slightly alters them, performatively introducing a metabolic step into the space. In the metabolic kitchen, we shift the focus away from the physical form of food to its experience . The metabolic dishes are served in a way that highlights the extra treatment they have undergone before being offered for consumption. In this way, the metabolic kitchentouches some aspects of the Anthropocene: humans (as part of nature), plants, animals and the machines (a fourth “population” on earth) are all integral parts of the life and death cycles that are inherent in food production. The metabolic kitchen takes this step.

The kitchen delivers a minimum of 100 portions per day. The production runs continuously through the program, with a production focus from Thursday to Saturday from 5pm to 10 pm, and on Sunday from 10:30am to 3:30pm. The food is offered for free and as soon as it is ready, it can be picked up and consumed on the spot by the guests. Inside the HKW, the kitchen presents four platforms, each with its own distinct program. Next to the entrance is the distribution platform, followed by mincing, steaming, and montage. Outside, just in front of the auditorium on the roof terrace is the fifth platform: the fireplace.

Each day a different dish will be produced within in this set-up.

For the 2012 De Wereld van Witte de With Festival entitled “The Street – Live Issue!” the Witte de With Straat is blocked for traffic for the first time. The space usually occupied by parked and moving cars is given to the people for alternative use and program connected to the festivals topic.

For the duration of the festival raumlabor surrogates the missing objects by its Limousine Service. It consists of a set of rebuilt cars that turn the automobiles purposes of cocooning/enclosure and individual mobility into interactive configurable mobile objects that interweave with the imagination of an alternative use of urban space that challenges the idea of looking institution’s programs and particularly with “The Street – Live Issue”. The forms and functions of each limousine are derived from the cult built around automobiles and the promises made by the huge advertisement apparatus as well as city and environment making connected to the issue that in practice most of the time contradicts it purpose.

The limousines will be tools for configuring the urban space by their ability to move so a variety of spatial settings within the street will be tested. Each limousine will contain a service or function yet will be adaptable to the needs of the visitors. Actions and services such as mobile bars and kitchens, stages for street talks, a bicycle wash, a bubble planetarium, a ping pong table stretch limo and many more will be provided. By the interaction with the public and the triggering of experiment the limousines become multiuse pieces of street furniture and create the common experience of a third space and new fetish opening up the at individual traffic within cities as a human need in a playful way.

In our project for Hong Kong we have a look on water as a common good. We focus our work around the fountain, as an old tool to provide water to be used by all. We investigate the availability of drinking water in public spaces in contemporary Hong Kong, having a look on the economy behind the distribution of waters and the specific situation in Hong Kong where most of the drinking water comes from the mainland China. We also keep in consideration that drinking water is a limited good. That is why we have a look on low tech possibilities on harvesting and treating of rainwater.

For the DETOUR 2012 exhibition we will design a fountain house which will be erected in a central public space in Wan Chai (or on the central exhibition site). This follows the concept of the inhabitable monument, that offers an internal space for a few to meet and interact around a fountain. The stream of water will be celebrated as a gift and offered as a special experience. The fountain house relates to old archetypes of architecture, the fountain in the square, the wash house in the town, the fountain house as annex to the cloister, and searches for it‘s relevance in todays societies open public spaces.

umfassender katalog der arbeiten von raumlabor bis 2008

EDITORIAL

Imagine if raumlaborberlin were a city; a city of many buildings, hotels, a mountain, a bridge, streets, paths and crossroads, a large river, a lake, parks and wild vegetation, lots of citizens, cars, horse-drawn carriages, underground and bus stops, an airport that is also a place of altercation and an opera house made of everyday utopias.
It would be a city of the moment, a city so flexible that it could change continually, always revealing another of its sides, depending on how you approach it. Some people would find it monstrous while others would consider it diversified, inspiring and sudden.

Acting in Public would be a city guide with which to discover the history of the city and to take a look into its future. This book provides insights into spaces between the facades of objects, shacks, theatres and palaces. It shows how wasteland can be accessed and how underestimated urban spaces can be transformed. As we forge new paths, traverse unknown spaces and have stories recounted to us, it soon becomes obvious: the city is our potential and we are its makers!

Invided by the Goethe-Institute China we develop a project for the Berlin pavilion of the Shanghai Biennale 2012 based on the story of the architect Richard Paulick (1903-1976).

part 1: Richard Paulick

Richard Paulick was a German architect, who spent 16 years in exile in Shanghai, between 1933 and 1949. The installation combines two works of Richard Paulick – one before his time in Shanghai and one directly after he came back to Germany. The installation takes the shape of the `Stahlhaus´ (steel house) in the city of Dessau and uses original old windows from Block C in Karl Marx Allee in Berlin.

The `Stahlhaus´ was originally designed by Richard Paulick and Georg Muche (A Bauhaus professor) in 1927 as a prototype building for mass-produced homes. Directly after its erection it was declared as impossible to live in, as the isolation and the acoustics were mediocre. Nevertheless with this building Paulick and Muche inscribed themselves in the history of modernist Architecture.

Block C of the Karl Marx Allee (formerly named Stalinallee) was designed by Richard Paulick in 1951. Stalinallee was the attempt of the young GDR government to show its brotherhood with Russia. The design of the whole street was delegated from Moscow. Paulick first tried to criticize the strongly ornamented design as `foolscaps´, and defend the International Style. But he soon changed his mind – not to risk his opportunities to finally build in big scale. In the Stalinallee competition he won the second price with a more than opportunist design and later became the chief architect of the construction of the whole street. After all he had been a communist and a skilled architect.

The little pavilion on the third floor of an empty warehouse in Nanjing road serves as a tea house. A place to contemplate, to dive into a strange biography that somehow represents a whole generation and thereby to get a glimpse into a part of Shanghai’s history that plays no role in the city today. The pavilion is a space constructed from 300 used windows, assembled to create walls and ceilings. The space inside has a clear path that ends in a large and higher space. The path leads around an aviary with plants, birds and crickets. On the path the visitor can collect everything necessary to have some tea in the big space: cups, tea, hot water and a little black and white comic-style-booklet explaining our installation.

The view from the tea salon goes on a panorama -a collage drawing of Paulick’s works. In the center you can see the interior of the Yao Residence- the only house that he built in Shanghai. Yao Residence is a James Bond like dream house, with a little river in the living room, a pagoda-bar and a round pool in the courtyard. A mix of Frank Lloyd Wright, Batman and the Ming dynasty. It shows – like his design for Stalinallee – that he was a man who would serve no dogma. Maybe in another world he would have become a Hollywood designer

raumlabors work “future” can be seen during the Sydney Architecture Festival 2012 at the exhibition “The Third Landscape”.

The Third Landscape is curated by Joni Taylor and includes raumlabor (Germany), Gap Filler (New Zealand), Richard Goodwin, Helen Armstrong, Izabela Pluta and Peter Nelson.

The Third Landscape exhibition and public program explores new understandings of heritage and ruin. It examines the transformative possibilities for regenerating seemingly negative landscapes of the forgotten and the blighted. Taking French Gardener Gilles Clément’s term for nature’s reclamation of wasteland as its title, it presents artists, architects and designers whose work addresses the adaptability of interstitial spaces. These works demonstrate not only how spontaneous biodiversity can occur but diverse cultural and social activities as well. While some take immediate and hands-on action in reworking the spatial program, others offer an alternative vision of landscapes already in the process of modification. Here – in the cycles of decay and dystopia – new potentialities are found.

This utopian non-place is apparent in the haunting photo-media work of Izabela Pluta and the suspended installations of Peter Nelson. The alchemy of Sydney’s industrial past is the focus of Helen Armstrong’s media homage, while Sydney’s current harbourside construction boom is critiqued in Richard Goodwin’s powerful performance piece. New Zealand collective Gap Filler present an archive of their optimistic interventions amongst the ruins of Christchurch, and German architects raumlabor create a new future vision in the Tin Sheds Gallery window.

A public program will encourage participatory discussion around heritage, urban planning and sustainability. It will involve the public in thinking about urban design and the future of our cities. This will be an opportunity for the audience to engage with local problems and discuss future directions and opportunities. A forum will focus on the changing face of Sydney’s watery edges, from the warehouses and industrial spaces of the working harbour to new urban planning developments. (exhibition text)

At the TODAYSART festival in the Hague we build a "Vortex" - a space like a whirlwind from locally available materials.

We live in times of great turbulence. Movements that normally cannot be seen are now taking shape and happening unexpectedly. Things that appeared to be clear now become unclear. In the absence of external forces, friction within flows will self organize into a collection of so called irrotational vortices.

The Todays Art Festival in The Hague occurs in a critical moment in the political and cultural life of The Hague where multi-million-euro architectural projects are being approved alongside dramatic budget cuts to smaller cultural institutions. Following previous experiments, this contradiction led us to propose a structure for the festival entirely made out of discarded materials, a vortex structure expressing this idea of a natural force that sucks everything in its path. This space would serve as a meeting point/festival center on the Spuiplein, the major public square in the center of The Hague and heart of the festival.

Raumlaborberlin joined forces with local garbage architects Refunc in organizing materials and building the structure. By tapping in to The Hague’s material flows we managed to obtain 3 containers of pallets, which were temporarily diverted to our working site for six days before returning back into their own life cycle. These 3 containers are the equivalent of what the supplier collects each day. The vortex thus becomes a materialization and temporary solidification of the local material flows.

The vortex rises from the ground in a circular motion and flows into itself 7 metres above ground creating a covered space which is used for experimental live acts and the main bar for the festival.

raumlabors work “cantiere barca” can be seen at the MoMA in New York as part of the exhibition “9 + 1 Ways of Being Political: 50 Years of Political Stances in Architecture and Urban Design”.

The political potential of architecture was one of the founding credos of the avant-garde in the early 20th century. Yet today it is commonly believed that this potential has been overwhelmed by economic realities and by the sense that architecture, by its very nature, is symbiotic with existing power structures. Such a perception, however, is belied both by the rise of a neo-avant-garde in the 1960s and 70s, and by emerging practices that bear witness to a rebirth of social and political engagement as an assertion of architecture’s relevance. This installation of architectural works from MoMA’s collection offers a series of fresh perspectives on the ways in which, over the last half century, architects have responded actively to the ever-evolving conditions of the polis. The display engages a range of media in MoMA’s collection, putting architectural stances in dialogue with the works of other urban practitioners: artists, photographers, and designers. Divided into nine sections (…), the exhibition presents a variety of critiques, from radicalism, institutional critique, and iconoclasm, to the blurring of social borders and the examination of public space.

(Ausstellungstext)
