As the winner of an international competition raumlaborberlin was commissioned with the realization of the exhibition architecture for the “Kunstausstellung am Humboldthafen”, which was supposed to take place on an empty site at the Humboldthafen in the center of Berlin. The exhibition architecture is generated from mobile containers. Berlin-based firms were asked to provid these objects for the time of the exhibition. In this way firmes from Berlin would help to create a stetting in which young contemorary art could present itself.

Conceived as a place that is both real and ideal, the House of Contamination is an experimental museum designed to host Artissima’s curatorial programme Poetry in the Form of a Rose. Located inside the vast area of the Oval Linghotto, the large temporary structure hosts a number of spaces for each of the art disciplines investigated: dance, cinema, literature, design, urbanism and education. A ‘project within a project’, the House of Contamination is conceived as a model, a prototype of a contemporary cultural center.

The hospital welcomed us in its lobby; we picked up an espresso and a glass of water at the cafeteria quickly. Around us doctors and nurses, patients and their visitors. A moment of relaxing before we got lost in endless corridors and went through innumerable compartments in the hospitals basement, looking for the room where the opening event of the competition was going to take place.

Raumlabor approached this project with the questions: is reinventing the history of a place a good idea, when the current accepted history isn’t helping the present situation? Is it possible by reinventing a history to create a new perspective for a site which has undergone a century of urban catastrophes?

The project “les Archivistes” is the search for parts of a puzzle that make up the history of a modern city. Over one year, residents of Herouville St.Claire participated in workshops with actors, choreographers, artists, writers, and architects, from which emerged fragments of their own imaginary City Archive. Herouville St.Claire is a 1960′s “ville neuf” (new town), planned and built with all the urban resources postwar modernism had to offer. “Le Tabularium” now attempted to put the puzzle together.

The bubble is translucent and very well adapted for projections from inside or outside. The result is a completely new view at night. Local and friendly artists are resposible for performances on the balcony.

raumlabor_berlin is engaged with temporarily transforming locations: a gallery into a laboratory, a public square into a location for scientific discourse or a cold corridor into a place with new social qualities. When spaces are meant not only to be neutral shells for content but also to convey particular functions and serve as catalysts, the way of dealing with these spaces, their design and programming have to be integral components of the overall conception.
