Conceived as a place that is both real and ideal, the House of Contamination is an experimental museum designed to host Artissima’s curatorial programme Poetry in the Form of a Rose. Located inside the vast area of the Oval Linghotto, the large temporary structure hosts a number of spaces for each of the art disciplines investigated: dance, cinema, literature, design, urbanism and education. A ‘project within a project’, the House of Contamination is conceived as a model, a prototype of a contemporary cultural center.

As part of the Exhibition “communities” raumlabor created a workshop in the Museum for Contemporary Art to build the “Canapés du Saint Nazaire”. The hospital welcomed us in its lobby; we picked up an espresso and a glass of water at the cafeteria quickly. Around us doctors and nurses, patients and their visitors. A moment of relaxing before we got lost in endless corridors and went through innumerable compartments in the hospitals basement, looking for the room where the opening event of the competition was going to take place.

Raumlabor approached this project with the questions: is reinventing the history of a place a good idea, when the current accepted history isn’t helping the present situation? Is it possible by reinventing a history to create a new perspective for a site which has undergone a century of urban catastrophes?

Design of a festival centre for the Steirischer Herbst Festival 2008 whose main theme is “Misfortuneavoidance Strategies”. The festival centre will be located in an empty baroque museum building. We’re interested in the idea of building an explosion; a shape and structure which develops a fascinating force at the exact moment of its dissolution. We will reduce the colours of the interior walls, floors and fixtures to a few grey tones so that only the shapes of the objects stand out.

Invited by the „GLOW“ festival, raumlabor designed together with plastique-fantastique in cooperation with Designhuis-Eindhoven, the „GLOW-Lounge“ festival centre. A light object out of 600 crates. The “Fondation Suisse” is the most prominent dormitory of modern times. To mark the 75th anniversary in november 2008 raumlaborberlin was commissioned to find a temporary solution for a recurring problem: the missing space for big festivities. In summer the >piloti< called terrace underneath the building would have been perfect, but in november it was too cold. We proposed to wrap the space with an inflatable, translucent membrane and thereby transform the semi public ambient to semiprivate. For three days the pneumatic hall gave home to concerts, speeches, dinners, a conference and a party.
